Home matters newsletter: January 2025

National Radon Action Month

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the United States, claiming the lives of approximately 21,000 people each year.

Radon may enter your home through cracks in its walls, basement floors, and foundations. It is formed naturally as uranium in soil and rocks breaks down, meaning it can be practically anywhere.

Key safety tips for radon in your home

It’s important to commemorate National Radon Action Month every January. This annual campaign focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of radon and sharing ways to alleviate risk levels. You may be able to protect your home and family by taking the following steps:

  • Seal cracks and other openings in your home, especially subterranean areas.
  • Increase ventilation in areas beneath floors.
  • Install a radon mitigation system.
  • Have your home’s radon levels tested regularly.

Tips for preventing mold

Mold can be a costly and difficult issue in your home. To avoid expensive repairs and rehabilitation costs, the following strategies are advisable to prevent infestation:

  1. Ensure proper drainage. Clear gutters and downspouts and grade your property to drain away from your home to limit the risk of water leaking through your roof or foundation.
  2. Limit humidity. Appliances that produce moisture, such as dryers, should be vented. Run bathroom and exhaust fans or open windows while showering.
  3. Prioritize plumbing. Insulate and maintain pipes to limit their risk of leaking or bursting, which can occur out of sight and allow mold to grow before you notice the issue.
